The Oscars are just a few days away now so I thought I’d review one of the nominations for Best Picture. Overlooked by this year’s BAFTAs, this rank outsider isn’t expected to win the Oscar but shouldn’t be totally overlooked. The film in question? The Fighter.
There is a bit of a theme going in the Best Picture category, most of them feature characters who display huge amounts of determination to achieve their goal. Heck one of them is even called True Grit, and in fairness The Fighter could easily have gone with the title ‘True Grit’ because main character Micky Ward displays so much of it Britain want to start using him on the roads in Winter.

It pays to be the strong, silent type.
Earlier this week, one of gaming’s greatest heroes reached
the major milestone that is his 25th anniversary. The gaming hero? The one and
only Link from the ever popular Legend of Zelda series.
Well I say the one and only but in truth there have been
several different Links, each with their own story and past and of course in
most of his adventures he isn’t usually called Link at all, he’s called whatever
you want. In my case: Andy.

Disney lets its hair down.
So I’ve seen Tangled. You have a problem with that? Well, it was free after all so why not, and I have to say I don’t regret going to watch it.
In a nutshell: it’s a Disney movie. So yes, now you know what to expect. Wait, come back, I haven‘t finished! Although it’s a Disney move that is clearly aimed at kids, I have to say there were a few moments that had me chortling away into my Capri-Sun like a hyperactive child at a picnic.

The King's Speech's many speeches.
I enjoyed watching the BAFTAs on Sunday night, I’m a sucker for these movie awards. Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Oscars, I just love watching them. Usually just to see who wins, but they are strangely entertaining. Movies are pretty much the only genre of awards ceremonies that are good to watch though. I mean, the BRITS were on last night apparently, anybody give a Lego brick about it?

Ed Chamberlin and the sour-grape seeking match stats.
Breaking News: Old Trafford groundsmen are confident they can uproot Joe Hart from between the sticks in time for United’s FA Cup clash with Crawley Town on Saturday.
The 23 year old shot-stopper is still stood gawping at the top corner of his goal mouth after Wayne Rooney scored a goal so memorable even Vincent Kompany enjoyed it. Hart is currently still at Old Trafford blubbering out gibberish as his poor brain attempts to comprehend what happened.

Surprise Surprise.
Earlier this week I was sat at home minding my own business browsing the BBC News website when I came across a story so shocking I had to put down my brew to avoid any unnecessary scolding.

Token Feature Writers.
Twitter brought an article to my attention yesterday. It was in The Guardian and was written by one of their feature writers Deborah Orr.
Now, in the article she critiques the 10 O’Clock Live show, Channel 4’s Thursday night satirical comedy and current affairs show. The show itself is an okay piece of television featuring Charlie Brooker, David Mitchell, Lauren Laverne and Jimmy Carr. It’s funny in parts but I’d much rather they hadn’t bothered and used the money on more episodes of The Daily Show, which has been horribly axed from More4.

If Carlsberg did football matches...
…they’d be pretty bland. England played on Wednesday night. No really they did. They flew all the way over to Copenhagen to face Denmark in a friendly. Naturally, it being a friendly most of the senior stars conveniently got injured again. Steven Gerrard I’m looking at you. The match itself featured all the young talent England has to offer. In other words: Aston Villa.

Speechless.
I finally got around to seeing The King’s Speech, you know that apparently brilliant piece of cinema everyone’s talking about? Well I can confidently report back to you that it is indeed brilliant! I was quite happy about that, as after all the hype that surrounds movies these days, I usually expect to be disappointed somewhat by them.
But that’s certainly not the case with this one. This historical drama really is as enjoyable a watch as it is an interesting one. I really like these kind of movies; true stories that are linked in with history, and I enjoyed this one a lot.

The fight for silver rages on.
The Kinect has been out for a while now, and I can’t make
out whether it was a success or not. The grapevine tells me that Microsoft’s
shifted 8 million of the little blighters, which I think is successful but
there’s been a bit of a backlash towards it, mainly from those who I suppose
you'd call ‘hardcore’ gamers.
These are the fellows who aren’t too happy at Microsoft
spending too much time with this camera sensory devise thingy, many of them
have threatened to divorce the Xbox 360 unless they put more effort in with
them. Not that Microsoft care, they'll keep on neglecting them and working
alone in the shed all night while the hardcore gamers sleep alone wondering
what could have been.

Eleventh hour bargain deals/rip-offs.
Well the end of January was one to remember wasn’t it? Egyptians took to the streets in order to remove president Mubarak from power, Nelson Mandela was released from hospital after a long illness, and back home Gideon Osborne told us all a story about how the weather is becoming a terrorist threat, contracting the economy by 0.5%. Sorry, but if a bit of snow caused our economy to contract then Australia is about to fold indefinitely.
But let’s face it, no one knows anything about any of that, because who has been watching BBC News 24? Nobody. Everyone was glued to Sky Sports News watching as they slowly and ever so painfully ticked down the nanoseconds until the end of the world, or the closing of a window, one of the two.
